Prone positioning has been cited as beneficial in improving oxygenation as early as the 1970s. However, this modality was considered a salvage therapy until the PROSEVA study was published in 2013.<\/span> This study demonstrated prolonged prone positioning for ventilated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients significantly improved patient mortality<\/span>1<\/sup>. Following the PROSEVA study, prone therapy has been incorporated into the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (EISCM) guidelines and is now considered the standard of care for patients with ARDS<\/span>2<\/sup>.<\/span> Prone therapy saw a significant increase in utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic, but those numbers have since declined due to manual prone positioning barriers such as difficulty performing the maneuver, risk of injury to caregivers along with the number of caregivers required, pressure injuries, and loss of lines and tubes. <\/span><\/p>\n
