May is National Nurse’s Month and Turn Medical wants to celebrate these essential caregivers! As a nurse, I want to write about a topic near and dear to my heart – nursing satisfaction. A survey done in New York and Illinois looked at nurses who left the field between 2018 and 2021.Close to 8,000 nurses left their jobs1! Why are nurses leaving the bedside? Nurse.org asked over 2,000 nurses questions about the state of nursing. When asked if nurses felt supported by their organization, 61 percent of nurses do not feel supported at work and 45 percent felt unsafe at work. Nurses are also concerned that the nursing shortage is getting worse with the primary causes being nurse burnout, poor working conditions, and inadequate staffing2. In an article from Becker’s, a former nurse expressed concern for patient safety due to working conditions1. Declining patient safety and quality of care is directly linked with nurse burnout3. As a former bedside nurse, I left a career I loved because I was burned out from inadequate staffing, apathy from other providers, and a lack of resources to help me effectively and safely do my job. Turn Medical gives me a new avenue to educate and provide tools for nurses currently working at the bedside.
